Step 1 — Steel or wooden? Pick by purpose, not fashion
In a typical Dewas home, the almirah has two very different jobs — securing valuables (gold, cash, documents, insurance papers) and storing clothes for the season. Step 2 — Size and number of doors
For a couple's bedroom, a 2-door steel almirah (approx 36×20×66 inches) or a 3-door wooden wardrobe is usually right. For a family of 4 sharing storage, step up to a 3-door steel almirah (approx 48×20×72 inches) or a 4-door sliding wooden wardrobe. Guest rooms and children's rooms are fine with a single-door compact almirah.
Measure your bedroom wall before you buy. Leave at least 3 inches of clearance on top for handling and 2 inches on the sides — steel almirahs are heavy and difficult to reposition once installed. Also confirm the doorway width along the delivery route: a 3-door almirah will not fit through a 30-inch doorway.
Step 3 — Locker, drawers and shelf configuration
Always specify a locker with your Godrej almirah — the small extra cost is worth it for one lifetime. Confirm the locker is a separate double-lock unit welded inside, not just a small removable box.
For clothes-heavy usage, prioritise longer hanging rod length (for sarees, kurtas, shirts on hangers) over more shelves. For document-heavy usage, choose more adjustable shelves and a locker with two keys.
Step 4 — Monsoon and moisture protection
Dewas monsoons are not brutal, but modern flats with less cross-ventilation trap moisture. Steel almirahs handle this well as long as you leave a 1-inch gap from the wall — direct wall contact causes back-panel condensation and eventual rusting.
Wooden wardrobes need slightly more care. Prefer laminated engineered-wood (HDHMR or BWR-grade plywood) over particle board for anything you plan to keep for more than 5 years. Add moisture-absorber sachets or naphthalene balls during peak monsoon, and don't press clothes tight against back panels.
