Step 1 — Pick the right bed size
Standard Indian bed sizes are Single (36×72 in), Diwan (48×72 in), Queen (60×72 or 60×75 in) and King (72×72 or 72×78 in). For a couple, queen is the default in most Dewas flats — 60 inches gives enough personal space without dominating a 10×12 ft bedroom. King is worth it only in a 12×14 ft or larger bedroom, otherwise you lose walking clearance.
For a growing child, go straight to a single 36×72 rather than a smaller kids bed — the child will outgrow the smaller size in three years. For a guest bedroom that occasionally needs two guests, a diwan 48×72 with a good pull-out mattress is more flexible than a fixed queen.
Step 2 — Storage or non-storage?
Hydraulic-storage beds (gas-lift) are the most popular choice we sell in Dewas. The full mattress surface lifts up on gas struts to reveal a large storage cavity — perfect for seasonal quilts, blankets, suitcases and clothes overflow from your almirah. Look for German or Italian hydraulic struts and a minimum 5-year warranty on the mechanism.
Box-storage beds have side or front drawers instead of a full lift — less storage volume but easier to open with one hand. Non-storage platform beds are the cheapest, but only make sense if you have plenty of almirah space and want a slim modern look.
One practical warning: hydraulic beds need at least 3 feet of clearance in front to lift the mattress. Don't push a hydraulic bed against a wall without measuring — and don't buy one for a very small bedroom where a chest of drawers would fit better.
Step 3 — Frame material honestly compared
Solid hardwood (sheesham, teak) frames are the longest-lasting choice — 20 to 30 years of daily use with occasional polish. They are heavier and pricier but hold their shape and resale value. Best for buyers who move house rarely.
Engineered wood (HDHMR, BWR-grade plywood) with a laminated finish is the current sweet spot — 10 to 15 years of use, modern look, easier to move, and typically 40 percent cheaper than solid wood. This is what most Godrej Interio and Nilkamal beds use.
Particle-board beds are the cheapest option and are best avoided for anything you plan to keep more than 3 to 5 years — they swell if any water gets in and lose grip on screws over time.
Metal-frame beds are excellent for kids and guest rooms — rust-proofed, easy to move and last forever, though they are noisier if screws loosen and creak with age.
Step 4 — Pair the right mattress
A great bed with the wrong mattress is a wasted purchase. Match the mattress to the bed size exactly — a 60×75 queen bed needs a 60×75 mattress, not 60×72. Confirm the mattress thickness the bed can take (usually 5 to 8 inches).
For couples on a queen or king bed, our default recommendation is a Sleepwell Nexa or Duroflex LiveIn pocket-spring mattress — each spring moves independently so your partner's turning does not wake you. Buy bed + mattress together and we will co-ordinate one delivery.
